A fire broke out in Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest city, resulting in the death of at least 52 people.
Emergency Services reported that 43 people were injured in a fire that broke out in the early hours of the morning. The death toll may increase, and a search and recovery operation is underway. Firefighters have pulled 52 bodies out so far, but more people may be trapped inside. At least one child was among the dead. Authorities said the fire had been largely extinguished, but smoke still seeped out of windows and strings of sheets hung out of some. The building was an “informal settlement” where homeless people had moved in without formal lease agreements, making it difficult to search. Witnesses said there might have been up to 200 people living in the building.
