Gujarat oath ceremony: After accomplishing a landslide victory in Gujarat on 8 December, the Bharatiya Janata Party will officially be forming the government in the western state for the seventh consecutive time on Monday (12 December). BJP leader Bhupendra Patel takes oath as the Chief Minister of Gujarat for the second time today in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and other dignitaries.

Gujarat oath ceremony: Journey of Bhupendra Patel from Memnagar councillor to 2nd time Gujarat’s CM
Born on July 15, 1962, in Ahmedabad, Patel holds a Diploma in Civil Engineering from Government Polytechnic, Ahmedabad. He is a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He is also an active member of Pandit Deendayal Library managed by RSS at Memnagar.
Beginning his political journey as a member of Memnagar municipality, Patel got elected as MLA from Ghatlodia constituency (Ahmedabad) in the 2017 Gujarat assembly elections.
He was sworn in as the 17th Chief Minister of Gujarat on September 13, 2021. He was first elected as BJP legislative party leader on September 12, 2021.
Breaking his own record, Patel once again won from Ghatlodia constituency by a staggering margin of 1,91,000 votes in the 2022 election.
Patel has vast experience in administration, having served as the Chairman of the Standing Committee of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and as a Corporator for Thaltej ward from 2010 to 2015. He began his political career in 1995 when he was appointed as the Chairman of the Standing Committee of Memnagar municipality. He served the municipality for over a decade, becoming Chairman of the local body during 1999-2000 and 2004-2006.
He also served as the Vice Chairman of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation School Board between 2008 and 2010. Later on, he served as a Corporator from Thaltej ward from 2010 to 2015. During this tenure, he served as the Chairman of the Standing Committee of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).
In 2015, he was appointed as the chairman of the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA). In 2017, Patel became a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the first time, by winning the election from Ghatlodia constituency with a wide margin of 1,17,000 votes.

Gujarat oath ceremony: 40 newly-elected MLAs facing criminal cases
A total of 40 newly-elected MLAs in the 182-member Gujarat Assembly have criminal cases pending against them, according to the ADR and the Gujarat Election Watch.Â
Of these 40 MLAs, 29 members (16% of a total 182) are facing serious criminal cases, such as the attempt to murder and rape, the ADR analysis showed. Among the 29 members, 20 belong to BJP, four to Congress, two are from Aam Aadmi Party, two are Independents, and one is from Samajwadi Party.
Gujarat: 83% MLAs elected to Assembly in 2022 polls ‘crorepatis’
A total of 151, or 83%, of the 182 MLAs elected in the recent Assembly polls in Gujarat are ‘crorepatis’ (worth over ₹1 crore), as per a study conducted by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Gujarat Election Watch.
Ruling BJP has 132 crorepati MLAs, followed by 14 of the Congress, all three Independents, and one each of the Aam Aadmi Party and the Samajwadi Party.
BJP has won 156 seats in the 182-member House.
The richest legislators are BJP’s Mansa MLA JS Patel ( ₹661 crore), Siddhpur MLA Balvantsinh Rajput ( ₹372 crore), also of BJP, and BJP’s Rajkot South MLA Ramesh Tilala ( ₹175 crore), the study showed.

BJP leader Hardik Patel, who won from Viramgam seat, on Monday said that he would happily accept whatever responsibility the party will assign him.
In an interview with ANI news agency, Patel said, “I am a very young MLA. I only believe in working for the party. BJP will decide who they want to keep in the cabinet. I will happily accept whatever responsibility the party decides to give me”.
The Patidar quota stir leader contested against Congress’ Lakha Bharwad and Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Amarsinh Thakore from Viramgam. He received 99,155 votes.
Patel switched from Congress to the BJP in June.

Gujarat oath ceremony updates: BJP creates 5 new records in 2022 polls
1. The Bharatiya Janat Party secured in 7th straight triumph in Gujarat after previous victories in 1995, 1998, 2002, 2007, 2012, and 2017.
2. The BJP’s voting share was 52.5%. The saffron party has registered the best-ever poll score in the Gujarat Assembly elections.
3. BJP swept the Gujarat Assembly election with a whopping 156 seats, which is the highest number of seats any party has won after the formation of the state in the year 1960.
4. Among the important seats that BJP won this time were Congress bastions Mahudha and Thasra of Kheda, Borsad of Anand, and Vyara. These seats were held by Congress since Independence.
5. The BJP also won 24 out of 27 ST reserved seats in Gujarat, an increase of 12 seats as compared to the last elections. The tribals, too, voted for BJP in huge numbers.

1. Bhupendra Patel, the second-time chosen CM, has been associated with RSS since his youth.
2. The engineer-turned-politician, Patel is the 5th Patidar CM in Gujarat. The former Gujarat CMs from the Patidar community include Anandiben Patel, Keshubhai Patel, Babubhai Patel, and Chimanbhai Patel.
3. Fondly called ‘Dada’, the Gujarat CM is a follower of the Akram Vignan Movement founded by Dada Bhagwan. It is a religious movement that drew inspiration from Jainism.
4. Bhupendra Patel is one of the few politicians who is lauded for his clean record as he never had any criminal case against him.

Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel won the Ghatlodia seat in 2017 as well. At that time, 13 candidates contested from this constituency. Patel comfortably won from Ghatlodia defeating Indian National Congress’s Patel Shashikant (BHURABHAI) by a huge margin of 1,17,750 votes in 2017.
Ghatlodia came into existence after the delimitation in 2008. It is a Patidar-dominated region. The seat has given two chief ministers–Bhupendra Patel and Anandiben Patel–to the state.
