BHAGALPUR: The city police have nabbed around 10 bike lifters and recovered as many as 17 stolen bikes from their possessions during a special drive launched in last few months.
According to police sources, more than 100 two-wheelers were stolen in the past four-five months this year whereas nearly 450 bikes were stolen last year. The incidents of bike thefts were reported more from the busy market areas under Kotwali police station, Jogsar PS (police outpost), Ishakchak PS, Tilkamanjhi PS, Tatarpur PS, University PS and other crowded places in the city. “However, the incidences of bike thefts have gone down since the launch of the drive against bike thefts. Several cases of bike theft were solved and recoveries of stolen bikes were made, besides the arrest of around 10 thieves and hardened criminals recently,” City SP Amit Anand told TOI on Sunday.
“We have identified many gangs and criminals who are indulged in selling bikes in intact form or their parts with the help of two-wheeler mechanics in the region. On the basis of information provided by the criminals, the police teams are identifying the ‘hotspots’ of such thefts,” the SP said, adding information about involvement of inter-district gangs in such crime incidences had also been sought. As per the police sources, hotspots of bike thefts are Sujaganj market, areas outside the court premises, wholesale vegetable market in Loha Patti, Hatia Road, Laluchak and other crowded places.
“People need be more careful while parking their bikes at such places as their carelessness may lead to theft of their vehicles. They casually park their bike, considering that it is covered under insurance which invites the attention of the thieves,” said a police official.
