PATNA: A week after a Dalit man and his family members were allegedly beaten up for trying to enter a temple, the police on Monday arrested one Himanshu Kumar in connection with the incident that took place at Bhagwatipur under Banshi police station area in Arwal district on May 15.
According to the police, Pawan Kumar, a resident of Kasturipur (Dalit Tola), along with his family members and relatives had visited Thakurbari Devi Sthan temple to take blessing on the day of his ‘tilak’ ceremony (wedding rituals). As soon as they approached the temple, over half-a-dozen men, belong to upper caste, allegedly stopped the family and used force to prevent them from entering the temple premises.
“We received a complaint regarding thrashing of a Dalit groom and his family members at Bhagwatipur, and the police registered a case against eight persons. One of the accused has been arrested in this connection and the police were conducting raids to nab the other accused persons. SDPO has been asked to investigate the incident, which took place last week,” Arwal SP Mohd Quasim told TOI on Monday.
Banshi SHO Amar Kumar said the incident took place on last Monday evening, when a marriage party reached the temple for a prayer ceremony during the ‘tilak’ rituals. “Some people belonging to upper caste locked the temple gate and stopped them from entering. Following which, a scuffle broke out between both the parties. They started beating Pawan and his family members, mostly women with sticks,” he said. In the incident, 3-4 people sustained injuries and were admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment, he added.
The complaint was lodged by Radha Devi, sister-in-law of the groom, in which she accused Himanshu, Gulshan Kumar, Golu Kumar, Om Kumar, Kaushik Kumar, Raja Kumar, Akhilesh Sharma and Pradeep Sharma for assaulting them. They have been booked under IPC sections 147/, 148, 149, 323, 504, 506, 307 and 325, and the relevant sections of SC/ST Act.
