PATNA: The JD(U) leaders and workers, led by the party national president Rajiv Ranjan alias Lalan Singh, on Sunday sat on a daylong fast before the statue of Babsaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar near the Patna high court to protest against the inauguration of the new Parliament building by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and no invite to the President Droupadi Murmu for the event.
The Congress also took out a protest march here to register its protest over the issue.
Addressing JD(U) party workers during the fast programme, Lalan accused the NDA government at the Centre of undermining the spirit of democracy and alleged that the BJP and its leaders were trying to change history through the new Parliament building.
The JD(U) chief also alleged that the BJP leaders insulted the women and the members of scheduled caste community by not inviting President Droupadi Murmu to the inaugural function of the new Parliament building. He said the Centre was flouting democratic norms and undermining the spirit of parliamentary democracy.
“Even if the new Parliament building was constructed, the President of India had the right to inaugurate it. Every year, the President addresses the joint session of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on the first day of the Parliament’s Budget session,” he said.
Referring to the Centre’s recent move to bring an ordinance to regulate transfer of administrative officers in Delhi government, Lalan alleged that the Modi government was “misusing constitutional bodies, as it recently happened in Delhi.”
Lalan said after Karnataka, the BJP would also lose the upcoming assembly polls in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.
Meanwhile, carrying placards in hands and shouting slogans against the Centre, the Congressmen took out the protest march from Boring Road roundabout to the Ambedkar statue.“The President is the custodian of the Constitution. Moreover, she is the first tribal woman reaching that position and she should have been given the opportunity to inaugurate the building. Instead, the PM himself did that.
He is trying to change the history of the country that is not possible,” state Congress president Akhilesh Prasad Singh, who led the protest march, said. MLC and AICC media panelist Prem Chandra Mishra said the Modi government had started a wrong trend by ignoring the President and the masses would teach it a lesson.
