Police said the security personnel were practicing firing on the ground without barricading.

A cannonball fell on the house, killing three members of the family.

Barachatti police station SHO Ram Lakhan Pandit said Govinda Manjhi and Suraj Kumar died on the spot, while Kanchan Kumari succumbed to her injuries on the way to the hospital.

“Preliminary probe suggests that the distance between the village and the firing range is said to be 400 metres. If the security personnel were coming in the firing range, they should have informed the local administration first and taken NOC. But today’s incident shows that there was a lapse on the part of the security personnel,” said an official, adding that a probe will be conducted after a committee is constituted. It is said that due to non-barricading by the security personnel, all the villages come under the firing range. The cannonball often fell off the border and into the village. Such incidents have happened earlier also.
