Ram Chandra Paudel wins Nepal’s presidential election

Ram Chandra Paudel of the Nepali Congress was on Thursday elected the third President of Nepal.

A common candidate from a coalition of eight parties, including Podel, the Nepali Congress and the CPN (Maoist Centre), received the votes of 214 members of parliament and 352 provincial assembly members.

Nepali Congress chief Sher Bahadur Deuba tweeted, “Hearty congratulations to my friend Ram Chandra Poudelji on being elected President.”

The total number of electors for the election of the President is 882, including 332 members of parliament and 550 members of the provincial assemblies of the seven provinces.

Election Commission spokesperson Shaligram said 518 provincial assembly members and 313 members of the federal parliament voted in the presidential election.

This is the third presidential election in Nepal since it became a republic in 2008.
