Taiwan to China: Respect our democracy

Taiwan’s government said on Sunday that China should respect the commitment of the Taiwanese people to the core concepts of sovereignty, democracy and independence.

Taiwan’s China-policy-making Mainland Affairs Council said in a statement, China should pragmatically deal with cross-Taiwan Strait matters in a rational, equitable and mutually respectful manner.

This was responding to comments by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, who said the government should promote the peaceful development of relations with Taiwan and advance the process of “peaceful reunification” of China, but opposed Taiwan independence. Firm steps should also be taken to do this.
